Tropical Storm Melissa is the only disturbance in the tropics today. Melissa is located about 185 miles SE of Kingston, Jamaica and moving ESE at 1 MPH with maximum sustained winds of 45 MPH. Gradual strengthening is forecast over the next day or so, followed by rapid intensification this weekend. Melissa is forecast to become a hurricane by Saturday and a major hurricane by Sunday. Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic are at risk for a multi-day period of damaging winds and heavy rainfall resulting in life-threatening flash flooding and numerous landslides. Extensive damage to roads and buildings is expected, potentially isolating communities for an extended period of time.
