Matthew Tate

September 16, 1940 - September 2, 2025

Matthew Tate (1940–2025) lived a life devoted to faith, family, education, and community service. Born in Independence, Louisiana, he excelled academically, graduating valedictorian of West Side High before earning degrees in education from Southern University and Southeastern Louisiana University. He worked for 35 years as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal.

A man of service, Matthew Tate was Washington Parish’s first African-American elected to the Police Jury and held leadership roles in numerous civic, educational, and church organizations. He was also an entrepreneur, owning Tate’s Tax Service, Mother Hen’s Nursery and Preschool Center, and multiple real estate properties.

Matthew was a dedicated husband to Rosemary Brumfield Tate for 58 years, a loving father to Mathis Tate (Shayla), and a proud grandfather to Shayla Nicole and Nyla Rose; sisters, Josephine, Leonard, and Bobbie George; grandchildren, godchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He touched countless lives with his wisdom, generosity, and faith.  

He is preceded in death by his parents, John Frank and Hester Tate, and many siblings.  

Matthew’s life and legacy remain a testimony of service, leadership, and devotion to God and community.

A visitation will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025 from 4:00PM – 7:00PM at Crain and Sons Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at 2:00PM at The R.W. Johnson Auditorium 610 T.W. Barker Dr. Franklinton, LA 70438 with Rev. Fredrick Sweetwyne – Pastor Officiating. Interment will be held at the Folsom Community Cemetery. 

Crain and Sons Funeral Home – Franklinton are in charge of arrangements.
