Obituary

Howard "Allan" Hillier

December 21, 1940 - July 15, 2025

Allan was born in New Orleans, LA on December 21, 1940. He was called by his middle name because his father Walter Howard Hillier was called by his middle name, Howard. Allan’s mother was Maxine Dennis Hillier; his grandmother, Ruth Dennis lived with the family also. They moved to Old Metairie when he was very young. He was an only child.

Allan attended Metairie Grammar and was in the first graduating class of East Jefferson High School.

He was interested in music and played the accordion during his youth. Allan was active in De Mo Lay, a masonic organization emphasizing citizenship for youth as well.

Allan attended the University of New Orleans and studied geology. He was a lifelong rockhound. His greatest interest was Louisiana petrified wood. He amassed a large collection of it as well as other gemstones, and minerals, particularly those from the Southwestern United States which he loved.

His father Howard was Greyhound Bus Driver for over forty years. This was important during Allan’s adult life as he opened a Greyhound substation in Harvey, LA in his adulthood and operated the business for many years with his parents’ assistance.

Another factor in father’s life that had a significant impact on Allan’s later adult life was that his father’s mother passed away when he was young and his father remarried, Howard and his stepmother did not get along. As result Howard moved in with Mrs. Ada L. Dean and her two sons in Lake Charles, LA. The Hillier’s family continued a close relationship with Mrs. Dean and her son. Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy Dean had a child, a daughter, Carole, who married Allan in December of 1993. She was also an only child. They had no children.

Allan moved to Folsom, LA, upon their marriage, they resided there and later in Mt. Hermon, LA on the Bogue Chitto River. In 2016, they moved to Bogalusa, LA, to be closer to their friends, the Ryan, Adams, and Bickham families.

Allan is survived by his wife, Carole D. Hillier. He is also survived by his 3 cousins, John (Sandra) Hillier of Harrison, AK, Michael Hillier of San Antonio, TX, and Beverly (Robert Simm, ATT.) Hillier Simm of El Paso, TX. He is also survived by his dear friends and adopted family which include Amber Ryan and Jerome Ryan, both of Bogalusa, LA, Keith and Lorrie Bickham of Angie, LA; Bent and Kristen Bickham of Bogalusa, LA; Wil and Heather Bickham of Sumrall, MS; Taylor and Larke Williams of Bogalusa, LA; Tim Miller of Franklinton, LA; Debbie McArn of Slidell, LA.
