May 5, 2025 Incident: The Amite Police Department is actively investigating a shooting that occurred on the evening of Monday, May 5, 2025, at the intersection of South Fifth Street and Martin Luther King Drive. Shortly after 7:00 PM, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area. Preliminary investigation indicates that several individuals were present during a physical altercation when gunshots were fired. Two individuals, a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old, sustained gunshot wounds as a result of the incident. Both victims were transported to a local hospital where they remain. Their conditions are not being released at this time. Chief Lendrick Francois offered the following statement regarding the incident: “Our officers responded swiftly to the scene and are working diligently to piece together the events that led to this senseless violence. We are asking for the community’s help—if you saw something or know something, please come forward. The safety of our residents depends on us working together.”
May 6, 2025 Incident: On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at approximately 5:00 PM, officers with the Amite City Police Department responded to 706 W. Oak Street following a report of a gunshot victim inside a vehicle parked in the parking lot near the roadway. Upon arrival, officers located one individual with an apparent gunshot wound seated inside the vehicle. Emergency medical personnel responded, and the individual was transported to a local hospital. Preliminary findings indicate that no individuals other than a witness were directly involved in the incident. At this time, the evidence suggests that the injury occurred inside the vehicle, and that it was self-inflicted. There is no indication of an ongoing threat to the public. The area is considered safe. This incident is not connected to the shooting that occurred on May 5, 2025. The Amite City Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The individual's identity is being withheld pending family notification.
