Jessie Lee Magee
February 15, 1930 - January 17, 2025
Jessie Lee Magee was born in Port Gibson, MS to the late Juney and Carrie Ellis McGee on February 15, 1930. She was the eldest sister of two brothers, the late Henry and RC and she had an older half-brother, the late Jesse. At an early age she accepted Christ as her Lord Savior. Jessie Lee spoke about one particular day she and the family were laying around the house and a local photographer would go house to house asking if families wanted to capture a family photo. She stated that they all jumped up and threw on some clothes and took this photo.
Jessie received her diploma from high school yet she spent her childhood days helping the family by working in the fields picking cotton. She carried herself with such class and grace that it was no surprise her beauty caught the eye of a young man named Noah Magee, whom she married on May 12, 1950.
She was blessed to have married a true family man who was God fearing, a protector and a provider. At that time many left the south and moved up north to look for work to support their family. Noah set out to travel to Cleveland Ohio to provide a better life for his new wife. She shared how many of the ladies in town teased her stating, “He’s not coming back to get you”. To their surprise, not only did he return to retrieve his wife, together they purchased a home in Cleveland, Ohio where they raised their seven children and built a legacy. Jessie Lee Magee was a seamstress by trade and enjoyed making most of her children’s clothes for school. She was a home-maker and achieved a Certificate as a State Tested Nursing assistant. She enjoyed participating in community activities, traveling and attended music concerts with her closest friends were they all dressed up in formal gowns.
Noah and Jessie were active members of the First Beulah Baptist Church that later branched off into Community Baptist Church; her husband became a Deacon within the church and they were sure that all of their children and children’s children were introduced to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Together they served in the church and their community.
In 1982, they decided to move back to Franklinton, La and build a home with their younger two children. Jessie joined and became a faithful member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. She was a member of the choir, taught Sunday school and worked in the kitchen. For many years she worked for Dr. Gerald Foret and Family. She assisted her daughter Tracy in the upbringing of her son Romaldo. Jessie Lee was always on the go. She made frequent visits to Cleveland, Ohio for birthday parties, births, graduations, weddings and home goings. She enjoyed leisure travels with her children/grandchildren to Virginia, DC, Florida, and Texas and even ventured out on the sea with her daughters Margie and Carolyn while cruising. She passed down her affinity for shopping, her joy of cooking and love of family. She always had a kind word to share and knew how to uplift your spirits. “We're gonna be alright.”
Jessie Lee and her eldest daughter, Margie Lee “made a pact”. Margie Lee would come to the south to care for her mother when she was ready. In Nov 2020, after retiring, Margie Lee devoted her life to caring for her mother until the Lord called her home from labor to reward on Jan 17, 2025. Her last words to her daughters was, “It’s All in God’s hands”.
Jessie Lee leaves to cherish her precious memories, her two daughters Margie Lee Magee and Carolyn Coletha Magee-Cunningham (Wendell) both of Cleveland, Ohio, three sons Noah Magee Jr. (Juatina) of Fredericksburg, VA, Lawrence Nicholas Magee of Cleveland, Ohio and Joseph Kevin Magee of Franklinton, LA. It was through her children she witnessed five generations. 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 6 great, great grandchildren. A host of nieces and nephews as well as family and friends.
Preceding Jessie Lee in death is her husband Noah Magee, Sr. and her two daughters, Alexine Magee-Hines and Lena Tracy Magee.
