On June 10, 2024, when news of Daugherty’s arrest was released, a victim of sexual battery came forward to ask that her case be reopened. In 2013, the crime had been reported to the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office and a DNA sample from Mr. Daugherty was collected as part of the initial investigation. That DNA sample was submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime lab in July 2024. On December 6, the scientific analysis report confirmed that Daugherty was the contributor of the DNA sample and he was subsequently charged with the crime of sexual battery.
Recent changes in Louisiana Law have extended the statute of limitations for sex crimes, allowing victims to come forward up to 30 years after the crime has occurred, or 30 years after their 18th birthday if the crime occurred before they were 18. If you have been a victim of a sex crime, it is imperative that you seek medical attention at the earliest possible time after the event. This gives investigators the best chance to collect evidence of the crime, and ultimately to prosecute those responsible.
We would like to thank the Bogalusa Police Department and Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for their diligence, and most of all commend the bravery of the victim in this case and her mother for having the courage to fight for justice not once, but twice.
