On December 8, 2024, officers from the Covington Police Department responded to the UPS package distribution warehouse located in the 2000-block of Ronald Reagan Highway in reference to a report of suspicious activity. Upon arrival officers located a suspect attempting to flee the scene.
Howard Cole Jr., age 25 and of Laurel, MS, was apprehended at the scene and subsequently charged with Simple Burglary and Resisting an Officer by Flight.
Detectives investigating the incident determined that Cole was not acting alone. A second suspect, 21 year-old Michael Abney Jr., also of Laurel, MS, was identified as an accomplice.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Abney for Simple Burglary and Resisting an Officer by Flight. CPD is investigating the possibility that Cole and Abney are connected to a multi-state burglary ring.
CPD is asking the public for assistance in locating Michael Abney Jr.
"I commend the swift response and dedication of our officers," said Chief Michael Ferrell. "This investigation may have broader implications, and we are working with law enforcement agencies in other jurisdictions to explore potential connections to other crimes."
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Michael Abney Jr. is urged to contact Detective Sergeant Jessica Restel with CPD's Criminal Investigations Division at (985) 867-1200 or submit a tip online at https://www.covla.com/tips
