George Ben Newkirk
February 4, 1944 - August 30, 2024
The late Frank and Rosa Newkirk were blessed with the birth of their son, George Ben Newkirk, on February 2, 1944. Raised in the Pelican State, Ben found spiritual guidance at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Varnado, Louisiana. This church became the cornerstone for him and his family, instilling in them the values of faith and community. In his later years, Ben reaffirmed his faith in Christ.
His Hands
Ben navigated the bayous of Louisiana through his employment as a factory worker in New Orleans. He also embraced the rugged life of a lumberjack when he and his family resided in Varnado. With an ax in hand and determination in his heart, he carved out a life in the dense forest, embodying the spirit of strength and perseverance. Working with his hands was a hallmark of his character, showcasing his unwavering resolve and love for the outdoors.
His Family
Ben was married to Essie Pearl Newkirk and together they built a strong family. He faced the heartbreaking loss of his beloved wife, Essie who was the love of his life. Despite this profound loss, he continued to live with a zest for life, cherishing every moment with his children and grandchildren. His laughter, clever comebacks, and stories will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was moved to tears in February as he celebrated his 80th birthday surrounded by his loving family. He treasured every moment of the celebration with his family as he often did at family gatherings.
His Resilience
Even when faced with a prolonged illness and reliant on the care of others, Ben’s spirit never wavered. He demonstrated unyielding resilience, never once complaining about his circumstances. His strength and positivity, often reflected in his humor, inspired all who knew him. Time and again, he proved to be an overcomer, facing each day with courage and grace.
His Legacy
George leaves to savor the aroma of his sweet memories his three sons: Terry Owens (Michell) of Kansas City, MO; Anthony Newkirk (Angela) of Katy, TX; and Darren Newkirk (Demetria), Carrolton, TX.
