Approximately 1,000 fentanyl pills were located after St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Office Criminal Patrol 4th District deputies stopped a stolen vehicle near the Abita Nursery Subdivision on Sunday (August 18, 2024) evening.
Deputies observed a vehicle which had been reported stolen out of Pearl River County, Mississippi. They conducted a traffic stop on the 2006 Cadillac CTS and identified the driver as 46 year-old James Spike and his passenger as 44 year-old Emelda Matthews, both residents of Washington Parish.
Inside the vehicle, deputies located a brake cleaner aluminum container with a false bottom. Inside the container was approximately 1,000 fraudulent fentanyl pills.
Spikes was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on the charges of Illegal Possession of Stolen Things, Possession with the Intent to Distribute Schedule II CDS, and Drug Paraphernalia.
Matthews was arrested and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center on the charges of Illegal Possession of Stolen Things, Possession with the Intent to Distribute Schedule II CDS, Drug Paraphernalia, and Resisting an officer by refusing to identify.
“Fentanyl is a very dangerous drug, and it is no secret that it is in our community,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “Thanks to some alert deputies and proactive policing, a large quantity of this deadly drug was taken off our streets and a stolen vehicle was recovered.”
