Hammond Teen Arrested For Gun at School

A 16 year-old Hammond male teenager has been arrested for bringing a gun to school and was booked into the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center on Monday (August 19, 2024), on one count of Possession of a Weapon on School Property.

On Saturday (August 17, 2024), Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) School Resource Officers (SRO) were alerted to a social media video from the day before showing a student revealing a gun in his school bag while in a classroom. An investigation confirmed the video was recorded at Hammond Magnet High.

Efforts to identify and locate the student began immediately and concluded with the teen’s parents turning him in on Monday.

“School is not a place for foolish games like this and guns are not toys,” said Sheriff Gerald Sticker, “Our students have to understand that these are dangerous circumstances that are far from funny and their consequences are nothing to be proud of.”

“I don’t know any other way to say this—guns are not allowed anywhere near our Tangipahoa Parish public schools. No weapons of any kind are allowed at our campuses, and if someone chooses to violate that policy, that person will face criminal consequences," said Tangipahoa Parish Schools Superintendent Melissa Stilley.

The Superintendent offered her appreciation for the swift response from the Sheriff’s Office. She said the district will be taking additional measures to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future, and she also asks families to use this case as a starting point for very candid conversations about students bringing weapons on campus.

The TPSO and the Tangipahoa School System thank the community for reporting the information about this incident.
