Arrest Made in Mandeville-Area Shooting - The Man Shot was The Man Arrested

The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office reported Thursday (August 1, 2024) that Careyunius Smith, a Slidell area man, has been arrested following a shooting incident which occurred Monday (July 29, 2024) morning at a Mandeville-area residence. 

Shortly after 9:00AM Monday, STPSO deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 1200 block of Dove Park Rd. It was determined Smith suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Responding deputies rendered aid until emergency medical services arrived on scene. Smith was transported to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery for non-life-threatening injuries and is said to be in stable condition.

Further investigation by the STPSO Major Crimes Unit revealed that Smith was unknown to the homeowners and was found trespassing on the homeowner's property. Upon the first homeowner encountering Smith near the garage of the residence and while attempting to determine why he was present on his property, Smith charged and attacked the homeowner. Smith violently struggled with the first homeowner attempting to gain control of him and pulled him away while preventing the homeowner from getting away and evading the attack. During the incident, the first homeowner yelled for the second homeowner who came outside to help. 

After refusing the homeowner’s pleas for Smith to stop the attack and release his hold of the first homeowner, the second homeowner retreated, armed himself with a firearm, and returned to the location of the attack, again pleading with Smith to stop. Smith responded by releasing the first homeowner and charging toward the second homeowner, who in fear for his life and the life of the other homeowner, discharged his firearm, striking Smith in the abdomen. Both homeowners then contacted 911 to seek assistance and medical aid for the subject, who was transported to a local area hospital. The investigation revealed that the homeowner was acting in self-defense.

The investigation resulted in Careyunius Smith being charged with Criminal Trespassing, Attempted Simple Kidnapping, Simple Battery and Simple Assault. Upon release from the hospital, Careyunius Smith, will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Facility accordingly.
