At their meeting Tuesday (July 16, 2024) evening, the Bogalusa City Council confirmed the appointment of James “Smitty” Smith as the next Chief of the Bogalusa Police Department. Smith, a 28 year veteran of the department, is coming out of retirement and will serve as the department’s first African American chief in its 110 year history. See the video, beginning at 1:08:15.
Prior to the Mayor's nomination of Smith, hearing from the public, and confirming Smith's appointment, the Council addressed the Agenda.
- The Council introduced three ordinances which will be discussed and voted on at the next meeting on August 6, 2024.
- The Council, following a Public Hearing, approved an ordinance that authorized the payment of costs and fees (in the amount of $2100.00) in Genco vs City of Bogalusa. (See the video beginning at 9:30 and continuing to 39:20). This matter generated a lengthy discussion, a number of comments and strayed off the topic into the issue such as of public records requests.
- The Council heard from residents during Public Participation, (beginning at 39:40 into the video of the meeting). As is often seen at Bogalusa Council meetings, many of the comments from the public were disrespectful to the Council and took up time for no reason.
Following the confirmation of Smith, the meeting adjourned.
The next Council Meeting will be held on August 6, 2024
