The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office is warning the public of yet another scam, this time, relating to taxes. Sheriff Daniel Edwards says letters have been sent through the US Postal Service in official-looking envelopes claiming to be from the "Tax Assessment Securities of Tangipahoa County". The envelope attempts to scare residents to respond by stating Immediate Action Required and urges individuals to contact them via the provided 1-800 number.
The 1-800 number is to a third-party company claiming to be a law firm. The call taker will then state "Well, if you call the IRS you'll never get through, I can call them on your behalf but know, I'd be privy to your information such as Social Security Number and Bank account information".
Detectives recommend that if you receive one of these letters, simply disregard and feel free to place it in "file 13".
Detectives also urge the public to verify whom they are talking to and never give out personal information to any third party.
