One Arrested, One Wanted for Tangi Village Homicide

UPDATE: April 25, 2024 - 4:30 PM. Haynes has been taken into custody! 

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office announces a suspect has been arrested and another is now wanted in connection with a homicide at Tangi Village Apartments on Tuesday (April 23, 2024). Sheriff Daniel Edwards says 21 year-old Tyrell "Rell" Brister of Hammond has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of 28 year-old Malcolm Toney also of Hammond.

On Tuesday, deputies responded to a shooting at the Tangi Village Apartments on Quick Boulevard in Hammond shortly after 11:30 AM. The victim, later identified as Toney, was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Through a course of interviews, Brister was identified as the shooting suspect and was taken into custody late Wednesday (April 24, 2024) afternoon.

Brister has been booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on the charges of (1) count - Second Degree Murder, (1) count - Aggravated Battery, (1) count - Aggravated Assault by Drive By, (1) count - Home Invasion, (1) count - Simple Criminal Damage to Property, (1) count - Illegal Discharge of a Weapon, and (1) count - Second Degree Battery.

Through the course of the investigation, investigators have identified a second suspect identified as 39 year-old Monica Haynes (also known as Monica Sims). Haynes is known to be driving a maroon colored sedan. Haynes is currently wanted for the charges of (1) count - Accessory After the Fact to Second Degree Murder, (1) count - Accessory After the Fact to Aggravated Battery, (1) count - Accessory After the Fact to Aggravated Assault by Drive By, and (1) count - Obstruction of Justice.
