Hammond Pedestrian Dies in Crash

On Saturday (April 6, 2024), at approximately 9:30 pm, officers with the Hammond Police Department responded to a crash with injuries involving a pedestrian on North Cherry Street at the intersection of Chrystal Street. The crash claimed the life of Curtis Young, 72 years old of Hammond.

The initial investigation by the HPD Traffic Division revealed that Young was leaving the Yellow Store, located at 310 East University Avenue, on foot when he walked onto the road. At the same time, Davis Lenear, 51 years old of Ponchatoula, was traveling southbound on North Cherry Street and struck Young who was standing on the centerline of the road. Young was transported to North Oaks Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries later in the night. Lenear, who was uninjured, was transported to the Hammond City Jail where he was charged with Driving without a License.
