Ruthie Mae Garrett

February 18, 1945 - March 2, 2024

Sis. Ruthie Mae Garrett, affectionately known by her family and friends as Ruth, was born February 18, 1945 to the late Jack and Aldonia Gatlin. She was a sibling of fourteen children. Ruthie attended school in the state of Mississippi where she loved her fellow classmates, instructors, and administrative staff.

She confessed Christ as her Savior early in life as she joined the Light House Pentecostal Church where she loved attending Sunday School and fellowshipping with friends and family. She later joined the Holmeville Missionary Baptist Church, under the direction of the late Rev. Dr. Calvin Jackson, Sr. Her current pastor is Rev. Dr. Michael Jackson, where she served in many capacities including: Deaconess, the Usher Board, and an Elder Church Mother. She also enjoyed attending Bible Study, Sunday School, and loved being on any program that the church presented.

Ruthie was united in holy matrimony to the late Deacon Jimmy Lee Garrett. God blessed their union with four children.

As a lover of and a passion for plants, Ruth, along with her husband, Jimmy, were honored business owners of J and R Nursery, Folsom, LA for forty plus years. There they produced a variety of green vegetables and numerous bedding plants. She also worked as a CNA at the Pontchartrain Health Center, Mandeville, LA for forty plus years.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Jimmy Lee Garrett, her parents, Jack and Aldonia Gatlin; three sisters, seven brothers, and two sisters-in-law. 

She leaves to cherish the memories of a life well lived: four children: Jimmy Dale (Justine) Garrett, Jr. Donia (Robert) Brown, Veatrice (Ricky Sr.) James; Cynthia (Byron) Navarre, Sr.; three sisters: Betty (Paul) Esquivel, Dorothy (Will) Branscumb and Dianne (Eddie) Geese; one brother, Ted Gatlin; one brother-in-law, Donnie Ray Hart (Marilyn); four sisters-in-law: Celia Garrett, Arlene Garrett McKay, Margie (Alvin) McGary, and Joyce (James/”Skip”) Jackson.; one god child, David Cook, Jr.; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

A visitation will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024 from 9:00AM – 11:00AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00AM at Holmeville Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Michael Jackson - Pastor Officiating. Interment - Folsom Community Cemetery. Crain and Sons Funeral Home are in charge of arrangements.
