Mattie Lou Penton

September 1, 1928 - December 13, 2023

Mattie Lou Penton passed away peacefully at her home in Angie, La, on December 13, 2023, at the age of 95. She ran their family dairy for 35 years while raising 8 children. She loved gardening, sewing, and making crafts. She also loved growing and sharing gourds, and for many years was known to many as “The Gourd Lady.” Mrs. Mattie was a lifelong member of Monroe’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws: Michael (Linda) Phillips, Stanley (Bonnie) Phillips, and Percy (Mary) Penton; one step-son: Terry Penton; two daughters and a son-in-law: Phyllis (Huey) Newcomb and Pamela Wolf; 21 grandchildren; 85 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Mattie was preceded in death by two husbands: Julius Phillips and Edsel “Pete” Penton; her parents: Percy and Leona Smith; four brothers: Clyde Smith, Lavell Smith, Oliver Smith, and Roy Smith; two sons: Wayne Phillips and Lloyd Penton; and two grandsons: Alvin Phillips and Jared “Heath” Newcomb.

Pallbearers are as follows: Blake Newcomb, Cory Newcomb, Dan Penton, Jack Wolf, Steven Penton, and Everitt Phillips.

Brown-McGehee Funeral Home was entrusted with final arrangements. Monday, December 18, 2023, visitation will take place in the funeral home chapel starting at 11AM until time of service at 2PM. Interment will immediately follow the service at Penton-Phillips Cemetery in Angie, LA.
