Hughie Ray Alford

May 23, 1935 - November 5, 2023

Hughie Ray Alford, age 88 and a longtime resident of Hammond passed away Sunday afternoon November 5, 2023. He was a native of Mount Hermon and a graduate of Mt. Hermon High School. Hughie attended William Carey University, where he played on the Crusaders baseball team and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree. Hughie then completed his Master’s Degree from Southeastern Louisiana University. He taught for 3 years before starting a 35 year career with the state of Louisiana Department of Education, working in different capacities through the years. Hughie was a founding member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Hammond and was always active in church leadership, missions and activities. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed watching LSU Tigers baseball and football. Hughie’s favorite pastime was fishing and he loved spending quality time with his family.

Survived by: Wife of 62 years: Betty Riley Alford of Hammond; 3 Sons and Daughters in law: James and Catherine Alford of Baton Rouge, Joseph Alford of Jacksonville, FL, Jonathan and Nancy Alford of Fort Collins, CO; 4 Grandchildren and Spouses: Jessica and Eric Ott, Erica and Daniel Joiner, Michael and Brittany Alford, Stephen Alford; 6 Great-grandchildren: Kamden, Paris, Calen, Danica, Kenlee, Emersyn; Also numerous brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces and nephews

He was preceded in death by his grandson Kelly Alford, parents Creason Alford and Claudie McElveen Alford, brother Wayne Alford, sister Emma Jean Alford McDaniel.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home (1109 Bene Street, Franklinton, LA) on Saturday November 11th from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 am Saturday with Rev. Mark Goree officiating. Following the service, a reception for family and friends will be held at Immanuel Baptist Church (1503 Pecan Street, Hammond, LA 70401).

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations to Immanuel Baptist Church (at the address above) or to a local charity of your choice.
