Melvin Alfred Johnson

February 6, 1954 - September 4, 2023

Melvin Alfred Johnson was born on February 6, 1954 and departed this life on September 4, 2023 at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital (Baton Rouge, La.) 

Melvin was the second child of seven children born to the marital union of Gloria Allen-Johnson and the late, Alfred Johnson, Jr. (aka: AJ) At an early age, Melvin joined Zion Chapel AME Church where he sang in the choir.  He later joined Sun United Methodist Church under the leadership of Pastor, Paul Corse. After marriage to Yvonne, Melvin moved to Slidell and worked in various other Churches that he joined or was affiliated with, often working as an usher or a choir member, as he continued his Christian journey with his wife and children every Sunday. 

Melvin finished High School at Covington High in 1972, then briefly moved to Detroit, Michigan, before enlisting in the US Army on March 30,1973, and was stationed in Germany.  In March of 1978, Yvonne relocated back to Louisiana from Detroit, Michigan and Melvin and Yvonne were joined in Holy Matrimony on December 16, 1978.

As the two became one, during their marital union, they begot one daughter, Naisha Janae’ Johnson. Melvin also raised his wife’s two children from her previous marriage, as his own children, namely, John Roderic Hatcher & DeShanan Evante Hatcher.  Melvin was a very unique man, during his disability years, he maintained 2 residences, both in Slidell and in Sun.

Melvin leaves to cherish his memories, Mother, Gloria Allen-Johnson,.a devoted wife, Yvonne Mondy-Johnson, 2 daughters, Naisha Janae’ Johnson and Torsha LaShay Jackson, 2 stepchildren, John Roderic Hatcher and DeShanan Evante’ Hatcher-Nelson, 2 Sisters, Debra Johnson-Jackson, and Regina Johnson.2 brothers, Ray Anthony Johnson and Gregory Johnson,1 Sister in law, Sherria Marigny- Johnson, Mother in Law, Ora D. Mondy-Williams. A special nephew, Darrius Andrews. And a host of nieces, nephews, Aunts, Uncles and other relatives.

Services will be on September 14, 2023 at Cook-Richmond Funeral Home in Bogalusa, Louisiana. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM.
