Obituary

Percy William "Uncle Bill" Corkern

August 14, 1945 - June 23, 2023

Let me tell you about my Uncle Bill..

He was really everybody’s Uncle Bill.

Uncle Bill was born in Bogalusa and graduated from high school in Loranger. He played football and basketball in high school and developed a lifelong love of LSU sports there as well. As a young man, he was hired on with the Baton Rouge Police Department while waiting for the construction industry to pick-up and never looked back. Uncle Bill went to the motorcycle division and became a bodyguard for Mayor “Woody” Dumas. After leaving the mayor’s office, he transferred to the police Academy. The entire time Uncle Bill was a police officer, he was also serving in the military. First in the National Guard, which they made him retire from, and then as an Army Reserve NCO.

Once he retired from the Police Department and military, he decided he was going to play golf. Since you can’t play golf every day, it was apparent Uncle Bill was going to drive our mother, his sister Ruth, completely insane. This is how Uncle Bill came to work for the Probation and Parole office for over 20 years. He was hired to set up and develop this academy, which he took very seriously. Uncle Bill truly loved working for Probation and Parole. He loved being a police officer and when he retired from Baton Rouge Police Department it was like he found another home at probation and parole. He loved teaching and talking and people.

Uncle Bill was an active Mason and an avid golfer. He was loved by so many. Uncle Bill may not have had biological children, but he does have us.

Thank you for sharing in the life of our Beloved Uncle Bill. -- Heather & Christi
