Obituary

Verna Lee Magee

November 16, 1945 - April 26, 2023

Verna Lee Magee (Johnson) was born to Mandy Johnson (Dillon) and Sidney Johnson Sr. in Franklinton, LA. She went home to be with the lord on April 26, 2023, at her home in Seattle, Washington.  She fought long and hard against cancer in 1994 and again this year 2023.

Verna married her husband, Edgar Magee after graduating from high school in 1964. Shortly after marrying she left everything she ever knew to move to Seattle, Washington and create a great life for the family that she would create with her husband. Her son, Frederick Aaron Magee was born the next year in 1965. Followed by her two girls, Donesha Sheree Magee in 1969 and her baby, Shakema LaShay Magee in 1975.  Verna was a loving housewife until all her children were school aged. A dedicated and devoted mother. She loved her family dearly and talked to them often especially her children as they were what she lived for. The only role she loved more than mom was grandma. She loved spending time with her grandson, Dorian Magee-Petty, helping taking care of him as a child then watching him grow and learning from him about music and video games.

During her life she had many friends that she loved and enjoyed spending time with, Mary Ann Davis, Clara Helen, Francis Taylor, Inez Moss, and Grace Hogan to name a few. She often talked to her brothers, and many came to visit her in Seattle. Some of her best friends were her sister’s in-law. Especially Almeta and Elnora Magee as they lived in Washington and enjoyed events together.  Once she retired, she spent time creating more relationships with her silver sneakers which consisted of many women in the area that she met at the local YWCA trying to stay active after retirement. They formed a strong bond and supported each other. The often went to breakfast and activities at the Central Area senior center together. Verna was a bright light and a strong woman that made the best of any situation. She was a great sister, mother, friend, and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all those that she touched.

She is now reunited in heaven with her parents, Mandy & Sidney Johnson Sr. Preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Magee; her brothers, Felton Johnson, and Jerry “sticker head” Warner. She is survived by her siblings, Charles Johnson, Clyde Johnson, Linda Johnson, Mikel Johnson, Sidney Johnson Jr.; her children, Frederick Magee, Donesha Magee, and Shakema Magee; Her grandson, Dorian Magee-Petty; and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family.
