Dora Jean Miller Edwards

August 15, 1935 - January 20, 2023

Dora Jean Miller Edwards was born August 15, 1935 and died January 20, 2023. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank M. Edwards, Jr., and is survived by seven of their children: Alice Edwards Stevens (Alvin); Frank M. Edwards, III (Kathy Sue); Clay Edwards (Dianne); Andrew Edwards (Belinda); Morgan Edwards; John Bel Edwards (Donna); and, Daniel Edwards (Blair), all of Tangipahoa Parish. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Brenda Brister Edwards, 24 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. Dora Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her son, Christopher Edwards, Sr.; her parents, Rudolph H. Miller, Sr. and Ouita Husser Miller; her sisters, Ouita Karney and Joan Wallace; and her brothers, Rudolph H. Miller, Jr., and Richard J. Miller.

Dora Jean graduated from Amite High School in 1953. She went on to graduate from Our Lady of the Lake nursing school in 1956. Dora Jean spent the majority of her career as a registered nurse serving in the emergency department at Lallie Kemp Charity Hospital in Independence.

A lifelong parishioner of St. Helena Catholic Church, Dora Jean also offered her time as a catechism teacher and an RCIA instructor, preparing others to join the Catholic Church. Along with her husband Frank, Dora Jean was active for many years in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul seeking charity and justice for the less fortunate in Tangipahoa Parish. Dora Jean reigned as the Amite Oyster Pearl, alongside Frank as the Oyster King, in 2009.

Services will be held at St. Helena Catholic Church in Amite on Monday, January 23, with visitation from 8:30 until 11:30 in the church hall and Mass of Christian burial at noon in the sanctuary. 

In lieu of flowers, Dora Jean requested that donations be made to the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency (LOPA), at give.lopa.org, or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, P.O. Box 1119, Amite, Louisiana, 70442. 

McKneely Funeral Home, Amite, is in charge of arrangements.
