Obituary

Dorothy Schoppe Johnson

October 27, 1934 - June 27, 2022

Dorothy Schoppe Johnson, 87-the bargain shopper, dumplin’ eatin, plant loving woman-passed away Monday, June 27, 2022, from complications of a tragic accident.

Born October 27, 1934, to Oscar and Ruby Varnado, Dorothy was the youngest of 7. She was the baby girl to 6 older brothers. Losing her brother, Jack and parents at a young age, Bill, August, Buck, Dick and Donnell stepped in and were always the protective older brothers to their baby sister.

Upon graduating from Varnado High School in 1952, as Valedictorian, Dorothy moved to Baton Rouge to attend Spencers Business School. During her time in Baton Rouge, she married, started her family and professional career.  Dorothy and her sons (Boo & Curt) eventually moved to Houston where she lived for 25 years, working as an executive secretary for Cameron International before retiring in 1997.

You may know her as Dorothy, Dot, Dottie or Aunt Dot – she never met a stranger and was loved by all that met her. She always came back to Bogalusa for holidays decked out in her best clothes from head to toe. Taking fashion ques from no one, she loved big hats, jewelry on every finger, designer shoes- she was beautiful in every sense.

Dorothy dreamed of one day moving back to Bogalusa upon retirement. When the time was right, she bought a house in town and had it moved to family property on Mitch Road. Five years later, after a labor of love was poured into it from brothers, nephews and other family members, her house was ready, and she moved back home to Bogalusa. Every room was painted pink – just like she had always dreamed. Each room was filled with treasures from auctions, garage sales, antique finds – some of her favorite pastimes.

Not one to cook or spend time inside, Dorothy could always be found in her yard, barefoot, mowing, planting and digging new flower beds. That is what made her happiest.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Jay “Boo” (Megan) Bourgeois Jr., grandson, Blaine (Danielle) Bourgeois and multiple nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son, Curtis “Curt” Wayne Bourgeois, her parents and 6 brothers.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2022, at Dorothy’s home church - Temple Baptist Church, 1300 City Limits Road, Bogalusa, LA. Visitation will be from 9:30-11:30 A.M., with a service immediately following. Brother Kevin Neary and Brother Chad Jenkins will officiate. Dorothy has requested that you wear her favorite colors of red or black to celebrate her life.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Temple Baptist Church, which held a special place in Dorothy’s heart.

The family would like to thank our friends at Enhabit, St. Tammany Hospital, and Promise Hospital of Baton Rouge for the compassion and care that was given to Dorothy during this difficult time.

Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home and Crematory in Bogalusa, Louisiana is in charge of arrangements.
