Retiring American Flags With Respect

The Washington Parish Government Office has received a Flag Retirement Collection Box to provide a centralized location for parish residents to deposit flags that are ready for retirement.

When an American flag becomes worn out or torn, the U.S. Flag Code outlines proper etiquette for respectfully retiring that flag by stating, “The flag, when it is in such conditions that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning” (Section K of the U.S. Flag Code).

Please feel free to bring your worn or torn flag to the Parish Government Office for proper disposal. The collection box is located just inside the front door of the Parish Government Office (909 Pearl Street in Franklinton, Louisiana).
