Vernon Ray Martin
April 9, 1957 - March 23, 2020


Vernon Ray Martin, age 62 and a resident of Franklinton, passed away Monday evening March 23, 2020 at St. Tammany Parish Hospital after a hard fight with cancer. He was surrounded by his loved ones when he left this Earth. He was better known as Ray or Ray Ray and was a mechanic at Triple-X Auto Parts for 28 years, before working at Dirt Cheap in Franklinton for 12 years. He also had his own bait & tackle shop at his home “Ray Ray’s Tackle Box” which he loved doing. Ray loved watching football, as he was an avid Saints and Mississippi State fan, watching NASCAR and fishing. He always loved spending time with his grandchildren and family.

Survived by: Wife: Betty Sue Martin of Franklinton; 2 Daughters and Sons in law: Melissa and Brad Hutchinson of Franklinton, Lindsey and BB Schexnider of Mt. Hermon; Grandchildren: Connor Smith, Mallory Smith, Ashley Smith, Wess Hutchinson all of Franklinton, Raeleigh Martin, Parker Wilkes of Mt. Hermon, Myles Dayton, Harrison Dayton of Pearl, MS; Mother: Lois Thomas Simmons of Franklinton; Siblings and Spouses: Dalton and Melanie Sumrall of Lacombe, Lisa and Craig McElveen of Baton Rouge, Kristie and Dewayne Spears of Franklinton; Also numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends

He was preceded in death by his father Robert Martin, step-father Jimmy Simmons, step-mother Lanell Martin, grandfather Fernie Thomas, grandmother Dorothy Thomas, aunts “Eula “Toot” Sumrall, Bett Jo Thomas.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home Thursday March 26th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 12:00 pm Thursday with Rev. Tim Gay officiating. Burial will follow in the Brooks-Martin Cemetery.
