One Dead in St. Helena Parish Crash

Yesterday morning (January 7, 2020), shortly after 8:30 AM, Troopers from Louisiana State Police

Troop L responded to a fatal crash involving a pickup truck and Tractor-Trailer on LA 43 southbound at Rohner Rd. in St. Helena Parish. The crash has claimed the life of 49-year-old Shawn McNelis of Ventress.

The initial investigation led Troopers to determine that the crash occurred as McNelis was driving a 1993 Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound on Rohner Rd. For reasons still under investigation, McNelis failed to stop at the intersection with LA 43. McNelis’ vehicle struck a Peterbilt Tractor-Trailer traveling southbound on LA 43. McNelis received fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene. The passenger in McNelis’ vehicle received minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. The driver of the Tractor-Trailer was uninjured. All drivers and the passenger were restrained at the time of the crash. As part of the investigation, a blood sample was collected for scientific analysis from McNelis. The driver of the Tractor-Trailer submitted a breath sample that showed no evidence of alcohol.
