Betty Joyce Hughes
May 21, 1946 - June 17, 2019



Betty Joyce Thomas Hughes, age 73 and a resident of Tylertown, Mississippi, died Monday night June 17, 2019 at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. She was a longtime active member of Lawrence Creek Missionary Baptist Church. Betty Joyce was an elementary school teacher at Thomas School for 33 years that impacted countless children during her many years in the classroom. She was formerly active in the Kappa Kappa Iota teacher sorority, the local Reading Council and also the Louisiana State Reading Association. She was always a devoted wife, mother and grandmother that loved cooking for her family and friends.

Survived by: Husband of 52 years: Kermit Hughes of Tylertown; 3 Daughters and Sons in law: Treasure and Jamey May of Knoxville, TN, Natasha Hughes of Petal, MS, Tiffany and Rusty Smith of Franklinton; 5 Grandchildren and a Spouse: Austen Hughes, Taylor May, Easton Smith, Evan Smith, Ashley and Brian Seal; 3 Great-grandchildren: Barrett Seal, Avery Seal, Sammy Smith; 3 Sisters in law: Jean Thomas, June Thomas, Susan Thomas; Also numerous nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents Alphus and Hattie Thomas, a sister Pauline Lumpkin, sister and brother in law Thelma and Ray Watson, brothers James Thomas, Marvin Thomas, Glen Thomas, father in law and mother in law Cannie and Lenora Hughes, brother in law and sister in law Prentiss and Mary Francis Hughes.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home on Thursday June 20th from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm and after 10:00 am on Friday. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 pm Friday with Eld. Duane Ball and Eld. Don Jacobs officiating with special words from grandson Austen Hughes. Burial will follow in the Thomas Cemetery.
