St. Tammany Sheriff Urges Residents to Lock Vehicles

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith is urging residents to lock their vehicle doors following a
rash of burglaries in subdivisions throughout western St. Tammany. STPSO detectives are currently investigating reports of at least twelve (12) vehicles that were burglarized between March 17 and March 22.  All of the vehicles that were burglarized had been left unlocked, and personal items such as wallets, purses and cash were taken from the inside vehicles.

Detectives believe the individuals who committed these burglaries also stole a vehicle from a driveway in the Emerald Creek Subdivision on March 20. That vehicle, which was recovered in Tangipahoa Parish the same day, had also been left unlocked with the keys inside. Detectives believe the burglaries were committed by the same three or four male subjects, all of which appear in video surveillance to be in their early 20’s.

“Vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity,” Sheriff Smith said. “No matter how quick of a trip you may be making or how safe your neighborhood is, it is imperative to always lock your vehicle doors and to never leave purses or valuables in plain sight.”

Anyone with information about these crimes or who believe they may be the victim of an unreported vehicle burglary, is asked to contact Detective Foltmer with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office by calling (985) 276-1330.
