A Lot Happening at the AARP Bogalusa Chapter Meeting!

The AARP Bogalusa Chapter 4032 February meeting will be held 3:00 PM, Thursday, February 21,
2019 at Washington Parish Council on Aging, Senior Citizens Center, 603 Willis Avenue in Bogalusa. An exciting agenda is planned that includes observance of National Heart Awareness Month and a tribute to Dr. Gerald Berenson, guest speaker Dr. Dale Presser who is a practicing cardiologist with an office in Bogalusa, honoring civil rights hero Cleophus Guy as part of Black History Month, recognition of Outstanding Volunteer Marilyn Lott, and hearing from a U. S. Census Bureau representative about employment opportunities. (See details of the Agenda items below)


  • Observance of National Heart Awareness Month and a tribute to Dr. Gerald Berenson, Director of the Tulane Center for Cardiovascular Health from 1992 until 2018. Berenson was a professor of Medicine, Pediatrics, Biochemistry, and Epidemiology at Tulane University.  The tribute will be held in cooperation with Bogalusa Heart Study, Our Lady of Angels Hospital and the Council on Aging. “Dr. Berenson was honored by our group in February 2016”, said president Emma Dixon. Berenson passed away November 22, 2018 at the age of 96.
  • The guest speaker will be Dr. Dale Presser, M.D. F.A.C.C.  Dr. Presser is a practicing cardiologist and recently opened an office and cardiovascular clinic in  Bogalusa.  
  • In recognition of Black History Month, AARP Bogalusa will honor Bogalusa Unsung Civil Rights Hero Cleophus Guy, Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement.  Guy is featured in a group historic photo of a protest in front of Bogalusa City Hall with civil rights leaders A.Z.Young, Ronnie Moore of the Congress of Racial Equity (CORE), Moore’s papers are archived at the Armistad Museum at Tulane. Guy is a longtime member of Bogalusa AARP, leader of the Bogalusa Citywide Pray Band and member of the Board of Trustees at Thirkield United Methodist Church. Emma Dixon, president of AARP said “We are so proud to honor Mr. Guy and all of those who made sincere commitment, dedication and sacrifice for justice and equality.
  • Marilyn Lott will be recognized as Outstanding volunteer for her service as secretary to AARP Bogalusa and for coordinating the annual Breast Cancer Awareness display in October each year.
  • Finally, a representative from the U. S. Census Bureau will be on hand to talk about employment opportunities in Bogalusa and Washington Parish for the 2020 Census.
