Joe King
March 20, 1928 - December 17, 2017



Joe King affectionately known as “Bubba” to his sisters and brothers, was born March 20, 1928 to Jim King and Annie Mae Chapman in Thomaston Ala. On the night of December 17, 2017, Gods angle came and claimed Joe at his residence, as he slept peacefully, taking and releasing him from all pain and suffering. At an early age, he joined the Glovers Premetive Church of Thomaston. Upon moving to Bogalusa, he united with the New Triumph Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Joseph Sartin and continued to serve as a faithful member, under the leadership of Rev. A.J. Manning & Rev. E.L. Powell, serving as the Chairman of Finance, Honorary Deacon and a member of the Brotherhood, until his time of death. Joe loved God, his family, friends & his church family.
He was a hard worker, loved helping others and believed in giving everyone a chance. At the age of 19, he joined the United States Army and fought in the Korean War, earning 2 bronze stars. After leaving the Military, he resided in Mobile and later moved to New Orleans and then to Bogalusa, working many years in the construction field and serving as President of Local Union # 523, helping many people gain employment.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories: (4) daughters Lillie (Moses) Fowlkes & Kathy (Faino) Coleman of Bronx, NY, Lisa (Lemuel) Holloway & LaTonya Newell of Bogalusa, (2) sons Rev. Willie Ray (Janet) Hodges of Raleigh NC and Mitchell (Maria) Newell of Bogalusa. (20) grandchildren, Nathaniel Agee, Markos Haughton, Brittany Frazier and Utijuanda Frazier of Alabama, Vincent Fowlkes of NY, Nicole and Amelia Hodges of North Carolina, Ryan King, Shirae Brister, Lemesha Holloway, Christian Holloway, Jemetria Newell, Jumetrus Bearden, Jayden Bearden, Mitchell Crummedy, Christopher Newell, Darrious Mingo, Hatteisha Newell and Milmarie Hernandez Of Bogalusa (36) great-grandchildren. (3) sisters Frankie (Rev. Fred) Alexander of Albion Michigan, Mollie Seals of Cleveland Ohio & Ella Owes of Mobile Al. (5) brothers, Sylvester (Comfort) Chapman of Memphis TN, Alfounsia (Hattie) Hill of Cleveland Ohio, Tasville (Louise) King of Amite LA, Fred Lee Chapman, and Jimmie Lee Kennedy of Corpus Cove, TX. A sister in law, Lillie Chapman of Mobile Al., a special niece Michelle Franklin of Mobile Al., a special neighbor who was more like a sister Mable Magee & a host of other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandmother Mollie Daniels; son Joseph James; grandson, Eric Fowlkes & sister, Velma Franklin; (3) brothers Willie T. Chapman, Weily Hill and Melvin Chapman and a long-time companion, Ardell Hodges
Visitation at Crain and Sons Funeral Home-Bogalusa, Friday, December 29, 2017 3:00PM-6:00PM with Wake from 6:00PM-7:00PM.
Funeral Services at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, Saturday, December 30th at 1:00PM with Rev. Johnny Johnson officiating and Rev. E.L. Powell, Eulogist. Interment will be held at the Bogalusa Cemetery. Crain and Sons Funeral Home – Bogalusa are in charge of arrangements.
