Washington Parish President Richard N. Thomas, Jr., on behalf of the Washington Parish Government, read a proclamation and made a presentation to the family of Ronda Sylvest Varnado Monday (August 28, 2017) evening. The proclamation named Ronda as the first recipient of the Ronda Sylvest Memorial Award. The award was established to recognize the heroic and selfless acts of bravery in the line of duty.
Ronda Varnado was driving a fully loaded water truck to the scene of a house fire in the Mt. Hermon area when, near the intersection of Mt. Pisgah Road and Burch Road, the truck left the roadway and tipped over, sliding several yards before striking an embankment. At that point, the water tank came loose and crashed into the truck cab, causing the her death.
