Bogalusa Police Department Public Information Officer Major Percy Knight reported that last night (July 12, 2017), BPD arrested Dakeithan Dantel Matthews (21) of Bogalusa on a warrant for First Degree Murder. The arrest was made after a traffic stop was initiated on South Dauphine Street in Bogalusa in which he was a passenger in the vehicle.
Matthews is charged with the murder of Jon Kelly Smith of Lumberton, Mississippi on Saturday (July 1, 2017).
On July 1, 2017, BPD received a call of someone being shot on Bund Street near Sullivan Drive. When the officers arrived, the victim and the suspect(s) were no longer on the scene. A short time later, BPD received a call from someone who witnessed a black male discard a black object in a trash can in the 1700 block of St. Louis Street. Officers located a black check book in the trash can that belonged to the wife of the victim.
BPD then received a call from Pearl River County Sheriff's Department who had learned the victim had been in Bogalusa to collect a debt and that the victim had been robbed and shot three times. PRCS reported Smith had died from the gunshot wounds.
