A federal judge has ruled that Kacie Breen, who fatally shot her physician husband in a 2015 case that riveted St. Tammany Parish, is entitled to money from her deceased husband's life insurance policy.
U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt on Friday (June 9) ruled that Dr. Wayne Breen's five adult children from a previous marriage had failed during a two-day trial in March to prove that Kacie Breen intentionally killed Wayne Breen for a financial windfall.
Engelhardt ruled that, after hearing testimony of Wayne Breen's anger, Kacie Breen's use of a handgun to protect herself as her husband physically attacked her "appears reasonable.'' Further, he wrote, there was no evidence to suggest Kacie Breen had a financial motive to kill Wayne Breen, "particularly with a firearm by her own hand to claim life insurance payments or gain a financial windfall.''
