Former D. A. Walter Reed Sentenced to 4 Years

Former District Attorney Walter Reed was sentenced today (April 5, 2017) to four years in prison for political corruption, much less than the sentence recommended in the pre-sentence report, which called for a sentence of nine to 11 1/2 years. He was also ordered to pay more than $615,000 in restitution and fines. Reed showed no reaction when U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon handed down the sentence.
Reed will not have to report to prison anytime soon, however. Fallon previously ruled that he may remain free on bond while appealing his May of 2016 convictions to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. That could take a year or so.
His son, Steven Reed, was tried at the same time and convicted on one count each of conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering. Fallon sentenced him to five years of probation and 50 hours of community service.
