Joseph Charles Giglio
March 9, 1931 - March 6, 2017
Joseph Charles Giglio, age 85, passed away on March 6, 2017 at Timeless Grace assisted living in Carriere, Mississippi. Much like his wife, Sally Bateman Giglio, who preceded him in death, his spirit and zest for life will continue to inspire and impact the many lives he touched and influenced through the years.
Although Joe traveled the world with Sally and friends, his heart belonged to Bogalusa. As a lifelong resident, he made a big influence on the city’s economic growth with his tremendous work effort and entrepreneurial spirit that spanned many professions. Joe retired from Crown Zellerbach’s accounting department and also served on the board of directors for Citizen's Savings Bank. Joe also owned and operated Estelle’s, a popular clothing store that helped Bogalusa residents look their best for 52 years.
Joe also helped usher the tremendous Mardi Gras spirit in Bogalusa as a long-time member of the city’s Krewe of MCCA which was established in 1981. He and Sally immensely enjoyed parade day which included an incredible ride and many annual post-parade parties for family and friends at his home. When Joe wasn’t dressed in Mardi Gras Green, Purple and Gold, he enjoyed other passions that included camping and traveling. Joe and Sally had the pleasure of visiting locations that included Sicily, Morocco, Mexico, China, Europe and many other great locations.
Joe was active for most of his life as a Mason and Joe's membership at Bogalusa’s First Baptist Church spanned decades. He always enjoyed going with Sally and showing off his granddaughters when they were in town.
Family was tremendously important to Joe. He and Sally had three children, Charles, Todd and Toni. They also had three granddaughters, Sarah Beth, Hannah and Ashley with whom they were able to spend a great amount of time. Joe’s affection, generosity and knowledge of ladies’ fashions always ensured that Toni and her daughters were always seen in the latest styles.
Joe was married to Sally for nearly 50 years and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. While Sally battled cancer during the last few years of her life, Joe tirelessly drove her back and forth to M.D. Anderson numerous times so that she would have the best possible care.
The Giglio family will be forever grateful for the tremendous flowing of friendship that was shared with them throughout Joe and Sally’s life. During their periods of sickness, both Joe and Sally received a constant flow of visitors, great food and encouragement. They also want to extend a special thanks to Belinda Seals for the care she gave to Joe for over 7 years so that he could stay home. The family would also like to thank the staff of Timeless Grace Assisted Living for the care they gave to Joe.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Alberta White Giglio, his wife Sally Bateman Giglio, and his son, Charles Warren Giglio.
He is survived by his son Todd; daughter, Toni Giglio Staton, and granddaughters, Sarah Beth, Hannah and Ashley Staton.
Visitation will be held Thursday March 9, 2017 at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home from 5:00 until 9:00 and will continue Friday March 10, 2017 at First Baptist Church in Bogalusa, from 9:00 until the funeral service at 11:00. Rev. Greg Whaley will officiate the service and interment will follow at Ponemah Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chris Pounds, Leonard Mayfield, Rick Brown, Kent Kirkland, Jewel White, and Roger White. Honorary Pallbearers will be Huey L. Pierce, Dr. Richard Hortman, Don Fendlason, Richard Mizell and Mike Breecher.
