Obituary

Cora Sue Williams Pope
January 12, 1938 - February 21, 2017

Cora Sue Williams Pope passed away on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. She was a woman who touched the lives of many as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, nana and friend. She leaves behind a world that is a better place because of her life and legacy. She died at Resthaven Living Center in Bogalusa, Louisiana after a lengthy battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Although the disease robbed her of her memory slowly over the last several years, God was gracious to only take away her ability to communicate in the last few weeks. She never lost her beautiful smile.
Cora Sue was born in Angie, Louisiana on January 12, 1938, to BJ and Margie Williams. She attended school in Varnado and Angie and then attended Southeastern University in Hammond until she got married. She then met the love of her life, James Edward Pope, and they married on June 2, 1956. They were married for almost 32 years when he passed away with numerous health issues in 1992. She worked tirelessly on the dairy farm for many years and then worked as a substitute teacher in Angie and Varnado after retiring from the farm. She always loved children, to cook, and never wanted to sit down. She was known for her cakes by her friends and family. She will be remembered for her acts of kindness and devotion to God. She was a long-time member of Angie Baptist Church and Varnado Missionary Baptist Church.
Cora Sue is survived by her daughters, Mary (Louis) Adams, Judy Pope Howard and Bonnie (Tim) Granger. She is also survived by her granddaughters Paula (Mark) Hopper, Amanda (Adam) Parker, and Gracie Granger and her great-grand children Kara Parker, Ayden and Weston Hopper. Other survivors include her four siblings Betty Sumrall, Charles (Margaret) Williams, Linda (Clifford) Morris, and Harry (Laurie) Williams. Additionally, she is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Edward Pope, her parents, BJ and Margie Crain Williams, sister-in-law Elizabeth Pope Seal, and brothers-in-law Leroy “Slick” Seal and Corbett “Joe” Sumrall.
Visitation for friends and family will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 and from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa, Louisiana. The funeral will follow at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at H. H. Williams Cemetery in Angie, Louisiana with Brothers Kelly Penton and Larry Mizell officiating. Pallbearers will include George Adams, J. L. Magee, Stanley Seal, Jimmy Thigpen, Chuck Williams and Dewayne Williams.
The family would gratefully acknowledge the loving care and devotion of her sitters, Evon Bell, Lynn Bennett, Chanda Keaton, and Sherri Schilling. Also, we would like to thank New Country Living in Carriere, Mississippi, Camellia Hospice and Resthaven Living Center who provided care the last five months of her life. Through the efforts of this entire team, Cora Sue was treated with the most loving care, given the greatest comfort and allowed to die with dignity. Our appreciation goes to Sheila Seal, her hospice nurse, who oversaw the care for the final weeks.
