Shawn Landry (18) of Bogalusa and an inmate in St. Bernard Parish jail, escaped during a work detail on New Year's Eve and allegedly stole a truck in Chalmette. Landry was captured at a home in Slidell after a daylong search by deputies from sheriff's offices in St. Bernard and St. Tammany parishes.
Authorities say Landry ran away from a corrections officer around 8:30 p.m. Saturday while taking garbage outside the jail in St. Bernard Parish. Landry was considered a "trusty prisoner." After escaping, authorities believe Landry burglarized a car in Chalmette and found keys to a truck parked nearby. He then allegedly stole the truck, which was found abandoned around on Highway 11 in Slidell.
Authorities said Landry has been serving a one-year sentence for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He also will face a stolen auto charge in St. Tammany once released from St. Bernard. Now, authorities said, Landry will face additional charges of escape from jail, burglary and vehicle theft.
