A motorist reported his vehicle being stuck by another vehicle on Mitch Road. The at-fault driver drove away, crashed into a utility pole on Mitch Road, and fled the scene, this time on foot. Another motorist called to report a man hiding in a ditch alongside Highway 21. Deputies responded and found Sumrall hiding in the ditch.
Sumrall was charged with a third offense of driving while intoxicated, driving while suspended due to a previous driving while intoxicated offense, hit and run, careless operation of a motor vehicle, felony criminal damage, no motor vehicle insurance, and failure to transfer vehicle ownership.
“This is a stark example of the danger of driving after consuming alcohol,” stated Sheriff Randy Seal (in part). “Fortunately, in this incident, no one was killed or injured, but this is not always the case.”
