The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Sex Offender Registry Division is a recipient of a $129,202 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering and Tracking and funded through the Support for Adam Walsh Act Implementation Grant Program.
The money will allow the agency to upgrade technology, hire an additional compliance deputy, provide the funds for training and equipment needed for that individual. Compliance deputies ensure all sex offenders are registered as required and are complying with all aspects of their registration.
The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Sex Offender Registry Division currently consists of two compliance deputies and one field deputy. The number of registered sex offenders living and/or working in St. Tammany continues to grow every year, and with that the workload of that division continues to grow.
Currently the division manages and oversees 453 registered sex offenders who live in St. Tammany, an additional 30 who reside elsewhere but are employed in St. Tammany and an additional 133 who are currently incarcerated. The state requires that all sex offenders that either live, work or attend school within the parish to be registered. The division also maintains records on both sex offenders that have relocated from St. Tammany to other areas, as well as sex offenders that relocate to our area.
“Keeping track of and notifying the public of the location of sex offenders is an important and time-consuming task, and the number of offenders living in our parish continues to grow,” Sheriff Randy Smith said. “The deputies in our Sex Offender Division are working very hard and do an excellent job. This grant will enable us to continue that work with the addition of a much needed third compliance deputy.”
