Alvin Ellery Hughes was born on January 3, 1958 to Rosemary Clark Hughes and Alvin Richardson. Alvin grew up in Richardsontown in Bogalusa, LA with his grandparents, Ulysses “Lish” Clark and Willie J. Clark. Alvin graduated from Bogalusa High School in 1976. Immediately, after graduation Alvin went to work at Bogalusa Paper Mill and after a 33-years at the mill he retired from International Paper. Alvin has united in marriage to Vanessa Stewart Hughes in 1978, to this union of 41 years, three children were born Shiquetta Hughes, Alvin (Tiffany) Hughes II and Talisa Hughes.
A lifelong Bogalusa native, Alvin was very active and beloved member of his community. He volunteered, participated, and contributed to many community groups/clubs including the local chapter of the YMCA Board and Civil Service Board. He was a loyal and trusted friend to many people because of his pure and generous heart. Alvin was a very wise but shrewd man. He did not sugar coat anything especially when talking to people he loved but he always gave sound advice.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Vanessa Stewart Hughes; children: daughter, Shiquetta Willett Hughes; son Alvin Ellery (Tiffany) Hughes, Jr.; mother in law Helen Stewart; his grandchildren, Zamir Rashard Harry, Alvin Ellery Hughes III, Ladarious Travon Fland, NiKeria Tion Anderson; siblings: Jill Hughes (James) Nickerson, Barry (Greta) Richardson; Vergie Beverly, and Cynthia (Ronney) Butler-McIntyre nieces and nephews: Roniqua Joie Toler Watkins. Alisha Cherise Toler, James Jerrod Spikes, Kyra Jillange Spikes, Taryn Ariel Spikes, Jason Jarrell Spikes, Jamie Nickerson, Justin Garth Hughes, Jr., TerreJean Hughes, and Jaren Nickerson, Brittni Richardson, Brandi Richardson, and Dion Richardson, and host of other cousin he concerned to be his sisters and brothers; and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Talisa Brigette Hughes; sister, Lynne Marie Hughes Toler; brother Justin Garth Hughes, Sr. mother Rosemary Clark Hughes, father, Melvin Hughes, paternal father Alvin Richardson; grandparents Ulysses “Lish” Clark and Willie J. Clark; nephews, James Nickerson, Jr., Jalen Nickerson; and great nephew Dallas Charles Smoot, very special cousin Byron Johnson, Keith Johnson, and George Johnson.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 19, 2019 from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Crain and Sons Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service Sunday, October 20, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Crain and Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Bogalusa. Interment - Bogalusa Cemetery.
