August 22, 1928 - June 30, 2019
Fleet Eugene Smith Jr., age 90 and a resident of Mount Hermon, passed away Sunday June 30, 2019 at Good Samaritan Living Center. He worked for many years with Patterson Steel, helping to prepare the platforms for the first bridge across Lake Pontchartrain and later retiring from the Washington Correctional Institute. Fleet enjoyed gardening, riding his tractor and watching his favorite Old Western movies and TV shows. He loved his family, his community and his church, Bogue Chitto Baptist Church where he served as a deacon.
Survived by: 2 Daughters and a Son in law: Betty Thomas of Mt. Hermon, Mary and Chip Burr of Baton Rouge; Daughter in law: Janis and Raymond Fisher; 4 Grandchildren and Spouses: Clay and Brenda Smith, Brandon and Jill Burr, Kayla and Chad Cathey, Brandy Thomas; 7 Great-grandchildren: Lilly Smith, Wyatt Smith, Parker Burr, Shelby Ann Burr, Camden Cathey, Oliver Cathey, Jack Cathey; Also numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years Willene Webb Smith, son Donald S. Smith, his parents Fleet E. Smith, Sr. and Martha “Mit” Bankston Smith and siblings Garner Smith, Earmen Smith, Gilda Newberry, Wilson Smith, Gertrude Simmons, Hardy Smith.
Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home Tuesday July 2nd from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Visitation will continue at 9:00 am on Wednesday at Bogue Chitto Baptist Church (41088 Hwy. 438, Mt. Hermon, LA). A funeral service will be held in the church at 11:00 am Wednesday with Rev. Joe Wiggins and Rev. Calvin Crowe officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial donations to Bogue Chitto Baptist Church.
