Jerry James Buras
August 3, 1933 - November 2, 2018



Jerry James Buras, age 85 and a resident of Mount Hermon died Friday morning November 2, 2018 at Riverside Medical Center. He worked for many years as a terminal operator in the oil industry. Jerry was also a boat-builder and had even constructed an 85 foot vessel named the Captain Jerry. He was also a shrimper and oyster fisherman and later in life raised beef cattle. His work was truly a labor of love as he always enjoyed the hard work that he did. Jerry never met a stranger as he enjoyed talking and visiting with the people he met, especially at the Kentwood Co-Op and the hardware stores in Kentwood and Mt. Hermon, where he often shopped. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War Era and later served in the U.S. Army Reserve for many years. Jerry attended Spring Creek Baptist Church. He was always very proud of his grandchildren and loved spending time with family.

Survived by: Daughter and Son in law: Jennifer Buras McElveen and Mike McElveen of Mt. Hermon; 3 Grandchildren: Emily McElveen, Sawyer McElveen, Brodie McElveen; Great-grandson: Caysen McElveen; Nieces, Nephews and their Spouses: Phyllis and Shane Buras of Franklinton, Jeff and Beverly Buras of Bootheville, LA Lenora and Terry Seabrook of Franklinton, Laurie and Tony Crochet of Belle Chase, LA Doug and Pat Buras of Hattiesburg, MS, Michelle and Ricky Rojas, Bridget and Kirk Franovich all of Belle Chase; Great-nephews: Gerald “Rock” Tompkins, Brandon Tompkins, Brent Tompkins, Trent Seabrook, Matthew Seabrook, Michael Seabrook; Also numerous other great-nieces, great-nephews, other family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Geneivia Guy Buras, father Roy Douglas Buras, mother and step-father Bessie Lee Maliden and Mike Maliden, brother Alvin Buras and a grandson Cody Fortenberry.

Visitation will be Monday November 5th at Spring Creek Baptist Church (72937 Hwy 1061, Kentwood, LA) from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. A funeral service will be held in the church at 12:00 pm Monday with Dr. Danny Smith officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Line Creek Baptist Church Cemetery near Kentwood.
