Shots Fired by 13-Year-Old at Alternative School in Hammond

At approximately 7:39 am today (April 14, 2026), a School Resource Officer with the Hammond Police Department was notified by Tangipahoa Alternative School staff that a 13-year-old juvenile male was refusing to exit a vehicle and enter the school.

A HPD Lieutenant and the SRO made contact with the juvenile and an accompanying adult. After speaking with police, the adult decided to return the juvenile to his residence. As the vehicle began to leave the area, the SRO heard what sounded like gunshots and observed the juvenile approaching him with a firearm. The juvenile was immediately taken into custody without further incident.

The adult sustained injuries and was transported to North Oaks Medical Center, where he is currently listed in critical condition.

Out of an abundance of caution, the Tangipahoa Alternative School was placed on complete lockdown. The campus was quickly secured and has since been deemed safe, but remains under lockdown while the investigation is active.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

“This type of violence is senseless and outrageous and sadly underscores why school resources officers are so important," said Hammond Chief of Police Edwin Bergeron Jr. "We are incredibly grateful that we had a SRO at the school to intervene and prevent further injuries."
