Bogalusa Police Reports Homicide of Lumberton Man

On Saturday, July 1st at 6:23 PM the Bogalusa Police Department received a call of someone being shot on Bund Street near Sullivan Drive. Upon arrival of the officers, the victim and the suspect(s) were no longer on the scene.
A short time later , the Bogalusa Police Department received a call from someone who witnessed a black male discard a black object in a trash can in the 1700 block of St. Louis Street. Officers located a black check book in the trash can that belonged to the wife of the victim, Jon Kelly Smith (54) of Lumberton, MS. 
The Bogalusa Police Department then received a call from Pearl River County Sheriff's Department. PRCS reported they had interviewed the wife of the victim. She reported to PRCS that she and her husband came to Bogalusa to collect a debt from someone that owed them money. While on Bund Street a black male came up to their vehicle and grabbed the black check book containing a small amount of cash. The suspect ran from the scene and the victim gave chase on foot. The suspect fired a small caliber gun at the victim striking him three times, once in the abdomen, once in the thigh and once in the foot. According the wife of the victim, he got back in the vehicle and told her that he would be alright and to drive him home. Somewhere between Bogalusa and Lumberton the victim died in the vehicle from the gunshot wounds.
The investigation is still on going between The Bogalusa Police Department and the Pearl River County Sheriff's Department. There are no suspects identified at this time.
