Vanessa Quillen Tyson

March 31, 1957 - October 31, 2020

“Miracle” Vanessa Yvette Quillen Tyson, was born March 31, 1957 to Shirley Mae Quillin and James Willis Johnson.    Vanessa  became ill on August 29, 2020.   While ill, she testified to a visit from her mother, Shirley Mae Quillin May and grandmother, Missionary Willie Mae Quillin.  She said that she saw both of them in a vision when she said to them, “I thought that I was ready”.  During this time her family, friends, and church members had many prayer meetings and God allowed her to return home.  She testified to thinking that she was ready and how God changed her name to “Miracle” and allowed her another chance to get ready.  So she made up in her mind to get ready and she recommitted her life to Christ on September 11, 2020.  Vanessa gained her wings and went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 31, 2020 surrounded  by her family. 

Vanessa and her brothers:  Julius, Edwin, James, Malcolm and Terence; and her sister Petrina were trained in the ways and things of God by their mother, Shirley Mae Quillin with the help of her grandfather; Rev. Amel Quillin, Sr.; grandmother, Missionary Willie Mae Quillin; Aunts and Uncles: Josephine, Mary, Amel, Gloria, Carolyn, Fred, Barbara, and Patricia.  This training was nurtured at St. John Temple Church of God In Christ.  She continued her training in God at Quillin-James Memorial Church of God In Christ, and The Kingdom of God Church under the leadership of Pastor Kendon Grant.

Vanessa begin her education in the Bogalusa City School System; where she graduated from Bogalusa High School.  She furthered her education at Southern University Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where she graduated with a B.S. in Social Work.  She continued her education at Southern University in New Orleans, where she earned a M.S.W. in Social Work.  During her career progression, she had many accomplishments.  Some of which included: the first juvenile police officer in Bogalusa, Louisiana; a police officer with the Bogalusa Police Department, there she was named the “Top Cop” and went to Washington, D.C. where she was given an award by Vice President Al Gore; an officer at Rayborn Correctional Institute; a counselor at Corban Consulting Service.  She became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc, Slidell Alumna Chapter, NAACP and Eastern Star .

Vanessa was united in Holy matrimony to Bruce Tommy Tyson on April 24, 2000.  They also became the adopted parents of Danielle Dillion, Chris Lowery, and DeShun Quillen.

Vanessa has joined her beloved mother, Shirley Mae Quillen May, grandparents, Rev. Amel Quillin, Sr., Mrs. Willie Mae Quillin, Clemmie and Audrey Johnson, and brother, Malcolm Quillen, mother-in-law, Panzy Tyson, stepfather, Harline May, stepsister, Dorothy May, stepdaughter, Tashanda Nicole in eternal rest.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Bruce Tommy Tyson, grandson and nephews she raised, Danielle Dillon, Christopher Lowery and DeSean Quillen; father, James W. Johnson; siblings:  Julius W. Quillen, Edwin (Jennifer) Quillen, Petrina (Thomas) Hartley, James (Jennifer) Quillen, Terence May, Christopher (Cassandra) Williams, Alicia Wilson, Cernora Johnson, James Johnson, Maggie Weaver, ASlee Harris, Gustavous Johnson, Detrea Nesbit, Bryant Johnson, Larry Johnson, Edward Johnson, Alvin Johnson, Frances Johnson Williams, daughter, Shawanda Trivillion,sister-in-law, Carol D. Quinn, granddaughter, Christian Elizabeth Lowery, great grandson, Little Chris and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews cousins and ride-or-die friends.
