James Fairest Owens

March 6, 1935 - August 31, 2020

James Fairest Owens, age 85 and a resident of the Warnerton Community, passed away Monday night August 31, 2020 at Riverside Medical Center. He was born in the Varnado Community on March 6, 1935 and lived in St. Bernard Parish for over 40 years. James returned home to Washington Parish following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina and was a member of Clifton Baptist Church. He retired as a heavy equipment operator, Local 406 after 44 years of service. James loved working in his vegetable garden and enjoyed selling his goods at Farmer’s Markets throughout the area with his nephew, the late Leonard Stogner. He enjoyed fishing, expertly cutting his grass and was affectionately known as “Unc” to his friends and many others. James was always a loving husband, father and grandfather that loved taking care of his family and grandchildren.

Survived by: Wife of 65 years: Glenda Faye Owens; Son and Daughter in law: James Garry Owens and Stephanie Nicholas Owens; Daughter and Son in law: Monica Faye Emerick and Mark Emerick; Grandchildren: James G. Quinlan, Scott E. Quinlan, Steven L. Quinlan, Nicholas J. Owens, Melissa Weems, Mark Emerick, Melinda Emerick, Amy Owens; Great-grandchildren: Jamie D. Quinlan, Asher Emerick, Nolan J. Owens, Eli W. Quinlan, Mason A. Owens, Nayell Weems, Annelise Quinlan, Ever Kaiser, Kit Kaiser; Great-great-grandchildren: Austin L. White, Lauralye D. White; Sisters: H. Loucrisie Reynolds, Vanda Jean Cauley; Also numerous nieces, nephews and other family members

He was preceded in death by his son Gregory Owens, parents James L. Owens and Mary Fortenberry Owens, daughter in law Alicia LeGrand Owens, brothers Willie, Daniel, Homer, Paul, Valentine, Charlie, Benton, Kenneth, Ralph, sisters Hattie, Edith Mae, Eunice, Eva, Agnes, and Ervaline.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home (1109 Bene Street, Franklinton) on Friday September 4th from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 am Friday with Rev. Tony Hicks officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
