April 16th Message from Washington Parish School Superintendent Frances Varnado

As many of you know, Governor Edwards has extended his order for all schools to remain closed for
the remainder of the school year. We are saddened by this extension, but understand that it is necessary for the safety of our community.

Although our buildings are closed, we do still encourage home learning. Teachers will continue to provide resources to families that may be used to keep students engaged in learning if they wish. In addition to resources provided by teachers, parents can access a toolkit of curriculum resources on the WPSB website. The assignments and suggestions are completely optional. These are not required and will not be graded. Student grades will only be based on work completed through March 13. Parents can access student grades in Parent Command Center on the last day of school, May 21.

Seniors may access their final grades on May 1 in Parent Command Center. Our high schools are using social media and school websites to highlight this awesome graduating class. We hope to schedule graduation ceremonies in late June or July once the governor’s stay-home order is lifted. We will keep you updated as decisions are made.

We will continue our “grab and go” feeding program through the end of the school year. We took a short break this week, but will resume on April 22. The last day will be May 22. Meals can be picked up on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between the hours of 10:00 AM and 11:15 AM. The feeding sites are Enon Elementary, Mt. Hermon, Franklinton Junior High, Thomas Elementary, and Wesley Ray Elementary schools.

This is a time of uncertainty and concern for everyone. We will continue to update you as we receive information and decisions are made for our school system. Please check our district website and our district Facebook page for regular updates.

Stay safe, wash your hands, and keep reading!

Frances Varnado
Superintendent
Washington Parish School System
