Obituary

Verta Mae McElveen
May 16, 1942 - January 26, 2020



Verta Mae Holmes McElveen, age 77 and a resident of Mt. Hermon, died early Sunday morning January 26, 2020 at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. She was a 1960 graduate of Franklinton High School and a longtime active member of Trinity Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School through the years. Verta Mae was also involved with the AWANAS children’s ministry at Trinity and she enjoyed teaching the young people to cook and sew. She was very talented with her hands and loved to quilt, crochet, sew, make crafts and jewelry, even ceramics and light woodworking. Verta Mae canned jellies each year and enjoyed working in her flower gardens. She was the lead cashier for 15 years at the former National Grocery and she was the owner/operator of the Looking Glass Beauty Shop for many years. She had a special place in her heart for pet dog Rose.

Survived by: Son and Daughter in law: Kenneth Lee and Tammy Douglas of Franklinton; 2 Daughters and a Son in law: Anglea and Mike Stafford of Franklinton, Marilyn Fabre of Livingston Parish; Grandchildren and Spouses: Steven and Bunnie Douglas, Amber Cooper and Barry Cooper, Jr., Sierra and Jake Martin, Trevor and Shelby Stafford, Laynea Stafford, Sadie Stafford, Casey and Josh Harris; Great-grandchildren: Isabella Cooper, Aubrey Cooper, Ayden Martin, Sienna Fabre; Sister: Nadine Fahnestock of Georgetown, TX; Also numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Belinda Dianna McElveen, husband Woodrow L. McElveen, granddaughter Jenna Marie Fabre, parents Lee Holmes and Janie O’Bryant Holmes, a sister Jane Willene Ashley, brothers O.V. Smith, Warren C. Smith and 2 infant brothers.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home Wednesday January 29th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 pm Wednesday with Rev. Jacob Gill and Rev. Mike Stafford officiating. Burial will follow in Ellis Cemetery.
