Obituary

Carey Schilling Wascom
September 1, 1926 - February 26, 2019



Carey Irene Schilling Wascom, age 92 and a longtime resident of Mt. Hermon, died Tuesday February 26, 2019 at Good Samaritan Living Center. She was married to the love of her life, the late Malcolm Lee Wascom, Sr. for 67 years. Carey was blessed to be a stay-at-home mom, grandmother, nurturer and mentor, although she loved working alongside her husband on their successful dairy farm. She was a member of Bogue Chitto Baptist Church near Mt. Hermon for over 70 years, where she served diligently and whole heartedly. Carey previously taught Sunday School and loved being a part of the Woman’s Missionary Union ladies group. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing and serving others. One of her favorite things was cooking biscuits and chicken and dumplings for all the family to enjoy.

Survived by: 4 Children and Spouses: Sandra Kay Rhorer of Mt. Hermon, Shannon and Lewis Powell, Malcolm Lee “Mac” Wascom, Jr. and Theresa Wascom all of Franklinton, Sheila and David Alaniz of Columbiana, AL; 10 Grandchildren and Spouses: Kari Guedry, Kami Rhorer, Richard “Richie” and Karen Powell, Darren and Amanda Powell, Robert and Dawn Powell, Michelle and Christopher Crawford, Amy Wascom, Andrew and Anna Alaniz, James Alaniz, Adrienne and Jared Fincher; 16 Great-grandchildren; Brother: Esco Schilling of Magnolia, MS; Also numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Malcolm Lee Wascom, Sr., parents Herbert Schilling and Mamie Potts Schilling, son in law Michael W. Rhorer, grandson Logan Hargis, sisters and brothers in law KT and Albert Stewart, Lore Lee and B.M. Wascom, Mavis and Lloyd Simmons, brother Charles Schilling, brother and sister in law Rev. Glynn and Juanita Schilling, sister in law Irene Schilling.

Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home Thursday February 28th from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Visitation will continue Friday at Bogue Chitto Baptist Church (41088 Hwy. 438, Mt. Hermon, LA) from 9:00 am until 11:00 am. A funeral service will be held in the church at 11:00 am Friday with Rev. Calvin Crowe and Rev. Joey Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to the staff of Good Samaritan Living Center and to Community Care Hospice for their care and support.
