Pedestrian From Mississippi Killed on I-10 in Slidell

On Sunday night (July 1, 2018), Louisiana State Police Troopers responded to a fatal pedestrian crash on I-10 near Old Spanish Trail in Slidell that claimed the life of Sylvester Horton (45) of Canton, MS.
Troopers determined that the crash occurred when Cecilia Gayle Genova (23) of Metairie struck Horton as he traveled from the grass median in an attempt to cross the I-10 lanes. The report makes note of the facts that Horton was wearing dark colored clothing, it was raining at the time of the crash, and the crash occurred at approximately 8:30 pm.
During the crash investigation, a 2003 Cadillac DeVille was located approximately 3.7 tenths of a mile west of the crash location. The vehicle was abandoned on the right shoulder of I-10 westbound, not running and no lights on. Inside the vehicle, several items were located that linked the vehicle to Sylvester Horton.
Troopers would like to remind motorists of the dangers of becoming a pedestrian on the interstate system. It is extremely difficult as a pedestrian to judge the speed of oncoming traffic. Should you find yourself in a disabled vehicle on the interstate system, call 911 or *LSP [*577] to be connected to the nearest Troop in your area.
